A Commentary on Cooking

One of the perks of living at the Hatch home at age 25--

This is what greets you after you come home from work:

Did I mention that lately I have become obsessed with food blogs? I have read every post from ourbestbites.com back until last summer.

I don't think of myself as much of a chef...and the majority of time I'm too lazy to cook anything spectacular. Maybe it's because I don't have much time now. Or maybe it's because I don't have much money. Or maybe it's because I don't have anyone to cook for? The other day I even expressed a concern to my parents that I am worried I will have a hard time transitioning to cooking for my family when I get married. I was shocked when my mother responded that she didn't like cooking, and never has. (!!!!!!) She has been cooking for our family my entire life, and I have never heard her complain!

Oh my goodness!

My dad then piped in with, "And I don't like going to work every day!" (!!!!!!!) Crisis. And I thought I knew my parents.

They both continued to say that they do it because it's necessary, and when they don't feel like doing it, they think of the other person (dad/mom) and just do it anyway. That's life, guys.

But maybe ourbestbites.com will change that for me...afterall, I've already memorized how to make fortune cookies (don't groan, it's not because I like Asia), spicy chick peas, breakfast potatoes, pie in a jar, and creamy broccoli bacon pasta...

  1. I hated cooking when I first got married. It's funny because Our Best Bites really changed that. I got their cook book and everything I made my husband loved. I felt like a good cook! I swear I'm not an infomercial.

The only thing we didn't like was the chocolate chipotle chili, but we're not big chili fans anyways. The best thing we made was the Pork Verde Tacos (I think that's the name). They might only be in the cookbook though.

  2. I totally remember thinking as a kid (like age 10) that I valued good tasting food more than mom and dad. I would make pancakes for the family on Saturday mornings because I thought they were so good. Not that mom's food wasn't delish-- it totally is-- but I (at least for now) enjoy eating delish food. And making it. For the most part. I can commit to 5 dinners a week with 2 as leftovers or grazing.

  3. To say I don't like cooking and never have is a bit too strong. I get a certain kind of satisfaction out of cooking for my family - especially when I cook healthy food and food from the garden. I consider making sweets a waste of time.

  4. This post totally made me laugh, Lindsey! My favorite part was not the shocking revelation that Mom and Dad don't actually enjoy cooking/working, but rather the knowledge that you have memorized the "pie in a jar" recipe. You are going to make some man very happy one day! Lucky guy that gets to bring a blueberry pie in a jar in his lunch to work every day! P.S. I must be like mom because I don't particularly enjoy cooking. Unlike mom, though, I do not think sweets are a waste of time. Cookie dough is NEVER a waste of time :)
